After the Mazda CX-3 Super Edgy, the automaker announced a series of special trim levels of the Mazda3 and the CX-30 in Japan, alongside small updates on the e-SkyActiv X motor.

Those include tweaking the intake port and exhaust silencer of the gasoline engine to produce a richer sound for spicing up the driving experience during acceleration. Additionally, engineers have updated the gas pedal feel for a greater “sense of unity with the car”. As a refresher, the e-SkyActiv X is a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 183 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque.

In terms of the new trim levels, the Smart Edition is available for models equipped with the e-Skyactiv X engine. It brings more comfort and safety equipment including an active driving display, smart brake support, high beam control system, lane keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

Meanwhile the Black Tone Edition, which is available for all powertrain variants of both models, is visually differentiated by the black 18-inch aluminum wheels, the gloss-black mirrors, and the red stitching inside the cabin.

The pictured Mazda CX-30 Black Tone Edition is fitted with optional aero components including the bumper and side-sill extensions.

Following the example of the more recent CX-30, all Mazda3 models get a new dimming turn signal which, according to Mazda, gives “a sense of life” in the car. Last but not least, the Platinum Quartz Metallic is a new color option for the Mazda3 and the CX-30, while the Polymetal Gray Metallic is added to the palette of the Mazda3 Sedan.

Orders for the mildly updated Mazda3 and CX-30 are open in Japan as of today, with vehicles arriving in dealerships in late November.

Japanese tuning company TRA Kyoto has just unveiled its bold Rocket Bunny widebody kit for the new Toyota GR 86.

The company, which sells its bodykits under the Pandem name in the U.S, has a long history of working on Japanese sports cars and has previously developed bodykits for the old Toyota 86. Unsurprisingly, the kit for the new GR 86 is just as bold and eye-catching as any other from TRA Kyoto and radically transforms the looks of the car.

The front includes an all-new fascia with a distinctive grille and a small secondary air intake just in front of the hood. There’s also a pronounced splitter and aerodynamic canards that further add to the aggression.

Continuing the changes along the sides are flared front and rear wheel arches. The front arches are particularly interesting and have an element that extends into the pronounced new side skirts. The car in these initial photos is also rocking aftermarket wheels and a lowered suspension system.

As for the rear, it includes a fixed wing that complements the ducktail spoiler found on the tailgate quite nicely. The taillights have also been tinted and there is a new bumper and diffuser package.

TRA Kyoto has yet to state when it will start delivering examples of the Rocket Bunny kit for the GR 86 nor has it confirmed how much each kit will cost.

Subaru recently confirmed that the 2022 WRX will debut later this year and while performance specifications about the car have been announced, a report out of Japan has offered us an insight as to what we can expect.

This report comes courtesy of Goo-Net and asserts that the new WRX and WRX STI will both come outfitted with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine. The basic FA24 engine is used in a handful of other Subaru models, including the Ascent, Legacy, Outback, and most recently, the new BRZ and Toyota GR 86.

A turbocharged version of this engine will find its way into both WRX models and in entry-level guide, the engine will be good for 296 hp, this report claims. Subaru will tweak the engine for use in the WRX STI, allegedly increasing power to the 345 hp. This is some way short of the 400 hp rumored some 12 months ago.

Regardless of how much power the new WRX and WRX STI have, they will have more grunt than the outgoing model and will be faster. It is understood that the WRX will come standard with a CVT transmission while the WRX STI will have a six-speed manual. Both will transmit their power to the pavement through an all-wheel drive system.

Goo-Net claims that the new WRX and WRX STI will be the final models that Subaru will introduce without some form of electrification as future generations will probably be hybrids.

If you’re a fan of Japanese performance cars, you might be familiar with Yahoo Auctions and all the incredible JDM cars you can bid on. While recently browsing through the classifieds, we recently came across a Nissan S15 Silvia drift car that is looking for a new home.

The S15 Silvia, also known as the 200SX in some markets, is one of Nissan’s most beloved sports cars from this late 1990s and early 2000s this side of a Skyline. It has a sleek, low-slung body and this example has been extensively modified to make it perfect for drift competitions.

The car has been equipped with an aggressive widebody kit and was built for the D1 Grand Prix in 2015. In addition to the flared arches, it features a pronounced front splitter, rocker panels, and a rear diffuser. The Lamborghini orange paint scheme also makes it stand out as do the new hood, complete with hood pins, and the aftermarket taillights.

Comprehensive mechanical modifications were made to the car to get it drift-ready. For example, the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder’s capacity has been increased to 2.1-liters and it now pumps out 396 hp and 338 lb-ft (458 Nm) of torque, all of which is sent to the rear wheels courtesy of a manual transmission. Images also show that the car sits on coilovers at all four corners.

The interior now sports a roll cage, Bride racing seats, an aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel, a new shifter, hydraulic handbrake, and painted inner door panels. The car’s chassis has roughly 250,000 km (155,000 miles) on it.

The iconic Castrol TOM’s Racing Toyota Supra has been found and the racing team has embarked on a project to restore it to its former glory.

This Supra is perhaps the most recognizable vehicle to ever compete in Japan’s Super GT series and was responsible for taking the rivalry between Nissan and Toyota to new heights.

A Redditor first stumbled across an article in Japan asking for donations and detailing the car’s history and the plans to restore it. Following its successful life as a racing car, the vehicle fell off the map until it was found in a storage unit in the Chugoku-region of Japan. It remains unclear just how the car ended up in the storage facility, but it has likely been there for many years. TOM’s Racing is leading the restoration and asking for donations to get it done, creating a crowdfunding campaign asking for 50,000,000 yen ($466,000). At the time of writing, 990,000 yen ($9,233) had been raised.

The team’s first funding goal is 10,000,000 yen ($93,000) and will involve a cosmetic restoration of the exterior and interior. The second funding goal sits at 30,000,000 ($279,000) and will make the car driveable. The ultimate goal of 50,000,000 yen is to get the car back to a race track.

The Castrol TOM’s Racing Supra had its debut during the 1995 All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship. Competing squarely against the Nissan Skyline of the day, Toyota decided against using the 2JZ engine of the road-going model and instead fitted the race car with the same 2.0-liter, turbocharged 3S-GT powertrain as the Toyota Celica WRC car, which was good for 493 hp and over 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque. The racer scored its maiden win on June 25th, 1995 at the Sendai Hi-Land Raceway, and went on to secure numerous other victories in subsequent seasons of the championship.

Nissan today unveiled the long-awaited restructuring plan and, as expected, news is not good.

The four-year plan outlines some radical decisions, such as the closing of the Barcelona plant in Spain from December 2020. Operational since 1983, the facility currently employs approximately 2,400 people, with another 600 workers in several related facilities.

The plant builds commercial vehicles, including the Navara pickup which Nissan intends to relocate to South Africa. Also made in Barcelona is the e-NV200 electric van which, according to reports, could be built at Renault’s plant in Maubeuge, France.

Closing the Barcelona plant is just one decision included in the four-year plan through which Nissan aims to “achieve sustainable growth, financial stability and profitability by the end of fiscal-year 2023.”

Nissan said it will take “decisive action” to transform its business by streamlining unprofitable operations and surplus facilities, alongside structural reforms. The company will also reduce fixed costs by “rationalizing its production capacity, global product range and expenses.” In addition, Nissan will prioritize and invest in business areas expected to deliver a solid recovery and sustainable growth.

The goal is to achieve a 5 percent operating profit margin and a sustainable global market share of 6 percent by the end of fiscal year 2023. The plan is focused on two strategic areas: rationalization and prioritizing core markets and core products.

Nissan will cut its production capacity and global product lineup by 20 percent

Besides closing the Barcelona plant, rationalization measures also include cutting Nissan’s production capacity by 20 percent to 5.4 million units a year, achieving a plant utilization rate above 80 percent, cutting the global product lineup by 20 percent from 69 to fewer than 55 models, and consolidating North American production around core models.

Other restructuring targets consist of reducing fixed costs by approximately 300 billion yen ($2.78 billion), closing the plant in Indonesia and focusing on the Thailand factory as a single production base in the ASEAN region, and sharing resources with Alliance partners, including production, models, and technologies.

Nissan will leave South Korea and close the Datsun business in Russia

The second part of the plan involves prioritizing core markets and core products. From a market standpoint, actions to be taken include focusing Nissan’s core operations in Japan, China and North America, leveraging the Alliance assets to maintain an appropriate operational level in South America, ASEAN and Europe, leaving South Korea and the Datsun business in Russia, as well as streamlining operations in some markets in ASEAN.

From a product perspective, Nissan will focus on global core model segments including “enhanced C and D segment vehicles, electric vehicles, sports cars” as the automaker plans to introduce 12 models over the next 18 months. Nissan will expand its presence in EVs and electric-motor-driven cars, including e-Power, with more than 1 million electrified sales units a year by end of fiscal year 2023. In Japan, the company will launch two more electric vehicles and four more e-Power vehicles, therefore increasing the electrification ratio to 60 percent of sales.

Finally, Nissan will introduce the ProPilot advanced driver assistance system in more than 20 models in 20 markets. By the end of fiscal year 2023, the automaker wants more than 1.5 million units to be equipped with this system each year.
